I don’t think about TMBG as an 80s band. Yes, I was there when Dial-A-Song was a thing, we used to call in from the Video Store where we worked in the village. And, off me, “Don’t Let’s Start” is one of the classic New Wave tracks of the era. But, let’s be honest, TMBG is the sound of nerd rock of the 90s, no? Some of their stuff is on the cusp of novelty. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Number Three” was a feature on Dr. Demento. The DYI aspect of this thing, with its drum machines and simple productions, is part of its charm and also a bit of a detractor.
