The 1986 Listening Post - Alien Sex Fiend - "It" the Album

Alien Sex Fiend - "It" the Album

I know that this album has nothing to do with it and doesn’t really sound like it but this is the kind of stuff that I imagine would be investigated as possible soundtrack music for movies like Liquid Sky.
We talk about the great splintering of the 80s and this is but another tendril. Evoking a experience that is both psychedelic and cocaine fueled, it’s the background sound for early raves but also psychotic meltdowns.

Whatever happened to ASF it happened just before they recorded this thing. A drum machine, a fetish for early Gary Numan and a lack of ideas but fueled by a false anger they believe their fans expect of them.
It’s not even challenging enough to pay attention to.

I appreciate that ASF keeps doing what they are doing, which seems to be music for murder/dance houses. But, it's so ugly and nearly out of tune vocally that it's distracting.
I just didn't like this any better than their last album.

Highlights:
I Am a Product

There were signs for Alien Sex Fiend everywhere. The name is cool, I guess. The music sounds like an excuse to have a band called “Alien Sex Fiend”. I’ve never been one for the Cramps-y goth horror sound. (Although I liked 45 Grave quite a bit) This is what Misfits should have sounded like. There’s a healthy dollop of humor in here and drums for days. The whole thing sounds like a 60s monster tv show that’s been colorized.
The ideas are there. The musicianship is there. Something’s missing and I can’t really put my finger on it. The songs…aren’t. That’s what it is.
It boggles that this band is still around. I bet Dead or Alive were friends with these guys.
