The 1986 Listening Post - Europe - The Final Countdown

Europe - The Final Countdown

#184/1349
May 26 1986
Europe
The Final Countdown
Genre: Rock
4.25 out of 5

Highlights:
The Final Countdown
Rock the Night
On the Loose

In the early days of Pandora I heard a song that I just loved. Well, a bunch, actually. Including “Circling Round the Sun” by The Orange Peels and a host of others. But, one day, there was this metal track called “Secret Society” that made me jump up and check to see what was playing.
It was Europe.
In 2006.
Whaaaaat?

The title track here has become a punchline, punctuating magic tricks by GOB Bluth. But, you know what? It’s like if Def Leppard scored The Never-ending Story. And the next track is better.
In fact, this whole record is a perfect piece of 80s ScorpionsLeppard rock.
It pummels when it needs to, it’s epic when it wants to and it actually surprises.
After so many shitty Europe records I can’t believe I found one I actually like.

The 1984 Listening Post - Europe - Wings of Tomorrow

Europe - Wings of Tomorrow

Europe
Wings of Tomorrow
3 out of 5

Highlights:
Wings of Tomorrow
Dance the Night Away

Super generic, uninspired, tired metal entry. Doesn’t reinvent the wheel. Doesn’t push the medium forward. However, you get a sense that they know the winds are changing as the title track tries to incorporate the heavier elements of modern metal. The rest of it is standard issue chukka-chukka/super-lead licks/high soaring vocals. For some reason they save most of their energy for the closer, “Dance the Night Away”, a song that wants so bad to be Judas Priest it can taste the Hellion.
Been here.

The 1983 Listening Post - Europe - Europe

How did Europe make this album, their debut record, a year AFTER Spinal Tap came out??? And with a straight face? AND have a 30+ year career after it? I’m honestly surprised the side one instrumental closer didn’t include a guitar being played using a violin as a bow.
I really shouldn’t have listened to this right after Metal Health. It’s not fair to Europe. This isn’t garbage but it’s not worth taking the time and energy that I am using/committing right now to write about it.
