The 1981 Listening Post - The Dugites - West of the World

The Dugites - West of the World

The Dugites

West of the World

Genre: Aussie Pop

3 out of 5

Highlights:

Waiting

The Dugites are back with another collection of poorly produced pop rock songs where their more scabrous musical inclinations mash up against their pop leanings.

It’s like if The Motels or Divinyls merged with Split Enz. And that’s not the best marriage. I mean, they stay together for the kids but it’s kind of an ugly team up. “Waiting” is a neat little ethereal piece and I sort of enjoyed “Malcolm’s Got a Problem” for it’s new wave jitters as well as “Who Loves You More” for it’s joyous calliope sounds but, in the end, they are just not enough to bring in the bucks.

The 1980 Listening Post - The Dugites - The Dugites

The Dugites

Genre: New Wave

2.5 out of 5

The Dugites were a New Wave band from Australia that was around in the early 80s but never got out of their country.

The songs are cute but never take off completely. I vacillated beck and forth putting “In Your Car” in the highlights. The verses are fun and the choruses would be as well if they didn’t go one twice as long with half as much to say. In the end I left I chose to punish the band for boring the shit out of me with their “songs”.

“Gay Guys” had no reason being 7+ minutes long. “No One Would Listen” with it’s Kander And Ebb calliope almost gets there but, it’s too late in the proceedings to be swirly and cheeky with nothing leading up to it to hold your attention.
