Requisite 80s cover: “Heart Full of Soul”
Roy Loney. Lead singer of The Flamin’ Groovies. I had zero idea that he did anything after the Groovies. Why? Because I don’t know a single player in that group. I mean, I love “Shake Some Action” but that is one of those bands that was just a group not a series of players. To me, at least. Like Strawberry Alarm Clock. And, upon research, Loney had left that band before their seminal hit.
This is a guy who knows how to play in his wheelhouse. Trouble is, it’s 1981, not 1971. He’s trying but he comes across dated. I liken him to Dave Davies. Not Ray. He couldn’t hold a candle to Ray or that band but I bet he has all their records.
There’s a lot of good stuff here but few tracks belong on your retro playlist. “Different Kind” would be the sort of track that Peter Ivers could have written and people would have thought it was “edgy”. “Too Funky to Live” is sort of fun and side two’s opener, “She’s No Lady” really reallllly wants to mine that Devo territory. And if he isn’t doing that, Loney is trying his hand at Knackish Power pop. Nothing sticks. I mean, “Cinema Girls” is fine. But, I don’t need to ever hear it again.
