I’m a sucker for Metal masters who dabble in classical and try to make the case that Beethoven or Tchaikovsky would be metalhead if they were alive in the 70s-80s. I don’t disagree with that and I’m not an expert enough to weigh in. But, when someone as talented as Malm gets his fingers around some stuff that sounds like it could be by one of those geniuses, I’m all in.

“Crying” is that track here. 

The rest of it…meh…sounds like what you’d expect from medieval obsession, dragons and Malmsteen Metal.

Sometimes I get the feeling that Malmsteen fancies himself an electric guitar slinging Beethoven. Is he that off? I don’t know. I bet if those dudes had access to the equipment we do “classical” music would sound very different. 

The obvious Wagnerian aspirations on “I Am a Viking” are indisputable and yet…also bloated and pretentious. 

The thing is, if you wanted this then you already knew what to expect from the last album. But if you had the last album you don’t need this because it’s really just more of the same.

Ok. Malm can play. So can Steve Van, though. We proved that a few records ago. Is there any need for a band to play with him on this? Is he just taking his chops out for a walk?

This….this…is…remarkable.

I have not too many more words. You will either out your headphones on full blast and let Yngwie melt your ears or you’ll look on it as a piece of pretentious self-aggrandizing. I’m not sure there’s a middle ground. For me, it is extraordinary.
