The 1986 Listening Post - The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

#236/1381
June 15 1986
The Smiths
The Queen is Dead
Genre: Alternative
4.75 out of 5

Highlights:
Frankly, Mr. Shankley
Cemetry Gates
Bigmouth Strikes
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

Wait, what?
This is...I love this.
There’s a buoyancy to the band here. It isn’t muddy and muggy. There’s joy and humor and the sound of a band that really enjoys playing with each other.
The actual instrumentation and melodies feel more assured and less experimental and that way Morrissey’s odd phrasing and plaintive style actually enhanced the songs rather than detract the way i felt previous albums did.
“Bigmouth Strikes” is the funniest I’ve ever heard M.

The 1985 Listening Post - The Smiths - Meat is Murder

The Smiths - Meat is Murder

Meat is Murder
Genre: Alternative Rock
2.25 out of 5

Highlights:
Well I Wonder
Meat is Murder

Here we go.
Based on that first album I am very hesitant. I’ll see you in 40 minutes.

This is part II of the “Morrissey sucks” saga. Honestly. The band is terrific. The music is great. The playing…I love it. And then Steven starts his nonsense and I’m out. (He has not earned a one word moniker. I just can’t with this guy)
Johnny Marr is writing gorgeous and interesting music that is pushing the genre and Steve is rambling about, warbling “melodies” that could be placed into any song.
Only on “Well I Wonder” does he come close to melding the two together. And the title track. That one really works for me.
Morrissey is awful.

The 1984 Listening Post - The Smiths - The Smiths

The Smiths - The Smiths

Full confession.
I’ve never listened to an entire Smiths record in one sitting. Ever.
Until now.
I’ll see you in 45 minutes
Sorry, me again. 5 minutes in. Why do I want to kill myself? I don’t feel like Morrissey is being honest here. Instead I think he’s singing a love song the way he *thinks* people want to hear him declare his love for them.
Ok. See you later.
Sorry, had to step in. I’m on song two and I wonder…did the band record perfectly good backing tracks and then have Morrissey sing whatever he felt like warbling over them? That worked years later for Eddie Vedder but here I just want him to shut the fuck up.
End Side One: Thank god Morrissey found Marr. His parents would have been sad with where he was heading if he didn’t find music.

Side Two:
Omg, someone give this man a hug. I get it man, you are miserable. Not as miserable as some of the goths that came before you (Looking at you, David J) but, there’s an argument to be made that Marc Almond’s Marc and the Mambas was a more accessible confessional band and Torment and Toreros a better vehicle for this sort of stuff and that without Marr, Morrissey follows the Jim Carroll path.
Ok, I kind of like “What Difference Does it Make” but that’s in spite of Steve and because the band sounds great. If not for that and the musicianship elsewhere this album would score lower.

I am not a fan of the Smiths. Or maybe I’m just not a fan of Morrissey.
