So, as we move to 1987 we’re gonna have to make some hard decisions. is someone lie Nevil, who is really a dance pop artist, ala Backstreet Boys or Robbie Williams, “rock”? I mean there are guitars in there so…
What this means is, I think we can say that certain artists, like Stacey Q and Robbie Nevil and the like are no longer in the mission statement.
He wants to be Michael Jackson and, yes, Jackson is not “rock” per se but he’s Michael Jackson and he’s important to the landscape of pop music. I think we are going to be a little more hardline in the future.
BUT
Here’s the problem:
Nevil’s album is really good. This is a great example of the dance/rock form of the era that is about to take over the airwaves as the world of pop music splits off even further from whence it came. A song like “Neighbors” could easily have fallen off any Rick Springfield album of the era.
