Cutting Crew was a joke. A punchline. And an easy one, at that. I recall name dropping them when we would want to dismiss something as hackneyed or trite. Just the name seemed to help evoke those sentiments.
Of course, this was mainly because of that ubiquitous single.
The thing is, though: This is a streamlined and dynamite example of the genre at work. Big, driving (Very groggy) rhythms, a musicality to the melodies enhanced by vocals that fit together seamlessly.
And that damned ubiquitous hit, which is actually one of the lesser tracks on the record.
