The 1980 Listening Post - The Only Ones - Baby's Got a Gun

The Only Ones - Baby's Got a Gun

#152
April 1980
The Only Ones
Baby’s Got a Gun
Genre: Power Mod Revival Pop
3.75 out of 5

Highlights:
Why Don’t You Kill Yourself
Me and My Shadow

This album could have been put out by the Zombies but also by any number of British Power Poppers of the era. It’s snotty and snarky with lyrics like “Why don’t you kill yourself, you ain’t no use to no one else” sung earnestly and without aggression. This is what the Vines would sound like 25 years later. It’s a sound that just won’t die.
Has Love & Rockets even admitted that they copped the sound from “Me and My Shadow” for their biggest hits 7 years later? No? Hrrrmmmm….
This definitely feels like a record by a band that has run out of steam. I felt that about midway through Side Two. It’s a shame, cuz you get the sense these guys might have been one hit away from that big record. “Fools” was probably supposed to be that hit. A big duet cover that smacks of 1978. If only they had released it then…
