The 1980 Listening Post - Harlequin - Love Crimes

Harlequin - Love Crimes

#167
1980 Housekeeping
Harlequin
Love Crimes
Genre: Ahhh…this is the 80s.
3.25 out of 5

Highlights:
Love on the Rock
Sayin’ Goodbye to the Boys

That opening track, “Innocence”…a male voice reaching for those high notes, straining to stay in the stratosphere. Keyboards attempting to rock where the Rhythm Guitar should be but just softening everything up. Crunchy guitars punctuating 16th notes on the bass. Lyrics that are nothing short of greeting card poetry. Gratuitous lead guitar solos.
This is the sound. This will permeate everything in a few years. I don’t know if we’re truly heard it yet but here it is. Everything we will hate about the 80s wrapped up in a pre-Jovi experience.
From there it’s a lot of power rock that could open for fellow Canucks, Loverboy. It teeters on bland and fun. It’s nowhere near the discovery that Kick Axe would be but I would not be sad if this came up on a playlist.
