So, when I first listened to XTC’s Mummer about 8 years ago I was predisposed to hating it. It came with a reputation. The first strains of “Beating of Hearts” hit me a little differently this time. Time + Distance = appreciation?
Sadly, no. Mummer is a series of ideas trying to become songs. The closest is “Ladybird”. Although it’s really just a musical meditation. Maybe not as much as “Human Alchemy” but still, it’s as malformed as that one. It’s a shame cuz I know these guys can write their asses off. Like “Funk Pop and Roll”. A classic XTC pop song. The kind they can write in their sleep.
