Wang Chung - Points on the Curve

3.5 out of 5

Highlights:
Dance Hall Days
Wait

Did Wang Chung study with ABC?
The big single isn’t the best thing about this band, who really succeed in pushing what David Bowie started years before (and Japan and Magazine and Ultravox….) into the mainstream. Succeeding in a way that Sparks didn’t. Perhaps because instead of cheekiness, Wang Chung is going for ominous and perilous.
The pulsing menace on “Wait” and underlying terror of “True Love” are the goal here and they succeed on every level on Side One.
By Side Two the bass-obsessed INXS sounding pop starts to were thin. I find myself bored but air bassing, so there’s that.
