The 1982 Listening Post - Gordon Lightfoot - Shadows

 Gordon Lightfoot - Shadows

January 1 1982

Gordon Lightfoot

Shadows

Genre: singer songwriter

2.25 out of 5

Is it weird that we include Gordon in this project? I mean, his contribution to “rock” expired almost before it started, right?

There are a gazillion singer songwriters who populate alcoshantys on every seaboard. I feel like he just lucky at a time when everyone was giving this stuff up.

And then I think, you know what. Give him a thesaurus and he might be The Decembrists.

Gordon is one of them heartbroken troubadours. Always searching for love. Or musing on it.

But he isn’t all that interesting.

I know that some people think this album is a high water mark for Gordon but I think he’s an aged cow that should be put to pasture.

Next.

The 1980 Listening Post - Gordon Lightfoot - Dream Street Rose

Gordon Lightfoot - Dream Street Rose

June 20 1980
Gordon Lightfoot
Dream Street Rose
Genre: Can we be sure that Van Morrison and Gordon Lightfoot aren’t the same person?
1.75 out of 5

That’s really the review.
This is the shantiest of shanty tunes. I don’t even know why we keep putting this 3/4 time minstrel on this list.
I forgot it was on and read Twitter for a while.
That’s it. That’s the review.
Good tweet. Send.

The 1986 Listening Post - Gordon Lightfoot - East of Midnight

Gordon Lightfoot - East of Midnight

#301/1426
July 1986
Gordon Lightfoot
East of Midnight
Genre: Soft Rock/Folk
2.25 out of 5

Let’s face it: Everything Lightfoot writes sounds like “If You Could Read My Mind”. And we only really need one of those.
These are all perfectly mediocre little soft rock songs you would hear played by a busker at a harbor town pub.

The 1983 Listening Post - Gordon Lightfoot - Salute

Gordon Lightfoot - Salute

July 1983
Gordon Lightfoot
Salute
3 out of 5
Highlights:
Whispers of the North
Knotty Pine
A better rock historian than I would draw the line between Gordon Lightfoot and Bon Iver. I swear that’s what I am reminded of throughout this listen.
Sometimes I listen when I go for my bike ride. Other times I stream on my Sonos while taking a shower after that bike ride. Other times I listen when I awaken at 5:15 AM cuz…old.
Two of those experiences were not conducive to listening to this record.
Mr. Lightfoot is so aptly named.
