The 1983 Listening Post - Graham Parker - The Real Macaw

Graham Parker - The Real Macaw

July 1983
Graham Parker
The Real Macaw
3 out of 5
I had never listened to Parker before last year. And when I did I devoured him. Another Grey Area Squeezing Out Sparks, The Up Escalator…all spectacular. Surprising and refreshing, yet familiar. Superb power pop that made me wonder why Costello and Jackson got all the accolades but Parker was left to to languish. He was a peer, right? Not a progenitor. He didn’t break down the walls so others could follow.
So, this album was one I have been looking forward to more than just about any other on this list.
It’s not good. It isn’t as much of failure as that Crenshaw but considering all that came before, I expected more than 2nd rate mediocre Elvis Costello.
Highlights:
Last Couple on the Dance Floor
Anniversary
