I really hated this record 10 years ago when I reviewed it for my blog. I don’t know if it’s the fact that I was immersed in obsessive compulsive Genesis listening or that it comes on the heels of that awful 10cc record but I like it a bit more than I did back then.
The drum machine is obnoxious, the programming lazy. And, thus, the record sometimes feels amateur in retrospect. It's not haphazard, but, rather, dated.
And it really drags the record down. I feel like I can sense what they are trying to do, the heights they are trying to reach but they are crushed by the weight of technology.
I would probably like something like “Second Home by the Sea” were it not for the antiseptic pre-programming. But Phil Collins should be arrested for his vocal on “Illegal Alien”.

All in all Genesis the album is a sure sign of middle age musicians losing their way or just plain deciding to settle in to male pattern bald rock.
