The 1983 Listening Post - The Fall - Perverted By Language

The Fall - Perverted By Language

I have a love/not love relationship with The Fall. Hex Induction Hour was excellent but Room to Live was meh. Grotesque bordered on brilliant but Live and the Witch Trials was a trial to get through.
From the opening of this album I’m reminded of a certain short lived band from the 80s. They played one gig at a club called The Dive. The owner of the club invited himself onstage to play trumpet with them during their epic punk dirge, “I’m an Artist, You Don’t Believe Me? I’ll Draw on Your Fucking Face!”
Their inability to play their instruments, one electric guitar, cardboard boxes and a male and female lead singer was almost charming. Their epic closer, a screaming rendition of “B-I-N-G-O” was classic. And then they never performed again.
Anyway, Yeast Infection wasn’t influenced by The Fall. But they were just as good for that one show.
I should know. As the drummer who pounded the cardboard and screamed “I’M PHIL COLLINS! I’M PHIL COLLINS!!!!”, I was there.
Perverted By Language is precisely what we would’ve sounded like if someone had given us a record contract.
There is no way on Earth we would’ve put out 31 albums of this stuff.
