Dig these cold, funky rhythms.
In order to sound relevant for the time, the addition of synthesizers and drum machines have the opposite effect. They weigh down the immediacy and the kitsch and replace it with sleeps and bleeps. But, once you get past the synthetic programmed coldness, it’s actually quite good. Not their best, but not as bad as Mesopotamia. If there’s a weak link here it’s Fred. His speak singing is too immediate for such a calculated record.
Big Bird wants to badly to be the new Rock Lobster but it’s not menacing or demented. Shame…
