Full disclosure. I didn’t love Lexicon of Love the way critics did. I mean, it was fine, but it wasn’t groundbreaking or anything. In fact, I felt it treacly and cloying for the most part. On this one, ABC is the sound of music getting bigger and less interesting while pretending to be romantic and epic and earnest. It’s neither earnest nor romantic. It’s fine, I guess. But it certainly doesn’t make me pine for more.
By the 3rd song I felt like I had heard the whole thing. By the end of Side One I was ready to move on.
Beauty stab sounds like bad INXS. Or like they are aping Simple Mind’s least interesting stuff.
Listening to this I started to imagine it playing over speakers in a bowling alley.
Seems about right.
