The 1986 Listening Post - Death in June - The World That Summer

Death in June - The World That Summer

#294/1419
July 27 1986
Death in June
The World That Summer
Genre: Darkwave
2 out of 5

Another year, another Death in June record only this time it’s a double album and that, I believe, is the first double album to hit the Listening Post. Is that right?
Man, this group is a challenge. Japanese spoken word amidst horns and synths doing their own thing while church bells clang in the background and a choir comes in for atmosphere. I feel like I’m attending 3 funerals at once.
Slavish devotion to Ian Curtis and depression does not a soundtrack make…wait…trumpets????

This belongs in the bin where I keep the Legendary Pink Dots and the most mind numbing David J stuff.
Side Three is sound effects and samples of…Japanese advertising? Ugh, it’s useless and torturous and should be avoided. Full point off for it.

Side Four is the most accessible, being revisits to previous material but also listenable.
