Listen to that opener. Their single. “Walking in Life”. It’s Hutchence and the boys. But not as good. Not as sexy. Not as enticing. But it’s something.

All that said, this is the sound of a bunch of guys giving it their all on one last hurrah. “The Modern Choice”, from where the title comes, suggests a swing for the fences. I’m not sure they could break out of the NZ area, even if they could support Nick Cave, which would have made a good match.

They are all over the place, which could be a good thing, but there’s little to hold on to.

Sometimes it’s the Beatles (“Take It Back”), sometimes it’s experimental, Cave (“Lonely Man”), sometimes, they are tapping into 2021 Grouplove style (“Bliss”) and it’s excellent and sometimes they are Joe Jackson (“You Got Something”).

And I don’t even know how someone composes “You Can Make Me Dance”. Brilliant.

Like I said. They swung. Wonder what they are doing now…

So, to be clear, this album is excellent.
