Living On Borrowed Time

Requisite 80s Covers: I’d never heard Otis Redding’s “You Left the Water Running” and I kind of wanna play it when company comes over, so, thanks, Aces!ut your version of “Wild Night” is somewhat lacking. Boo. And most of the rest of the record are other people’s songs.

Boy the timing of this one couldn’t be more perfect. I’ve been taking some guitar lessons (to be honest, I am not sure I am learning anything in those 30 minutes that I couldn’t already glean from YouTube videos). But I have been playing with Major pentatonic scales and, therefore, am getting a better understanding of the mystery that was always lead guitar. Especially the kind that shows up in Southern Rock.

And then, yesterday, Dusty Hill, the bassist for ZZ Top, died.

So, Southern Rock on this summer morning feels especially perfect.

They open with a laconic Allman Brothers-esque track in “What Kind of Love Is This?” And then they get down to business. Honky Tonk business.

This eclectic bunch of Southern Fried Rock featuring some terrific B3 work by Billy Earheart goes down nicely with a cup of Joe.
