Crazy Cavan & the Rhythm Rockers

Cool & Crazy Rock-a-Billy

Genre: Straight up Rockabilly

3.5 out of 5

Requisite 80s cover: Hank’s “Hey Good Lookin’”. Stick with the original.

Time stopped for Crazy Cavan. So much so that he doesn’t sound “crazy” as much as he does a torch carrier for the likes of Hank and Elvis and the stalwarts of the early rock and roll sound.

Which is to say, this is country.

There’s nothing super special here. It’s a perfect rendition of the sound. Not sure who was buying this in 1981 but, if this is what they were in to, this is what they got.

In the late 90s I had a Tascam 4 track recorder. It’s how I started writing songs in my apartment. A friend of mine who had written a ditty wanted to record it and I went to his apartment and we laid down the rhythm tracks. And then I came up with a lead line (or he did, I can’t recall). I funneled it through a distortion pedal. He was adamant that it sound clean and as close to Hank Williams as possible.

It was my first time recording someone else and also the first time I would object to their artistic choice.

I was right, the song would have been better if it had some bite.

But bite is not what he wanted.

In the 50s, I’m sure this was scandalous. In the 80s, it’s quaint.

I’m only listening to the initial release and, to do that, you would have to reorder the songs in a playlist. Or not. This is fine background music but I’ll never listen again.
