Requisite 80s cover: “Funky Stuff” by Kool and the Gang. I wanna hit the dance floor listening to this.
If you told Laurie Anderson and Grace Jones to listen to nothing but Fear of Music for a week and then forced them to write a record, this is what it sounds like.
Only musically much better than either of them at their best.
Now, we tend to avoid dance and funk and jazz here because the marching orders are for me to listen to rock music that I might have missed at the time and there was no way I was going to delve into Descloux. Although if you had said, “But, angled zippered shirt wearing New Romantic wannabe Allen, if you love Bow Wow Wow you’re going to love this.”
And then I would have bought it.
And I would have, indeed, loved it.
There is some weird shit here. A song by Nino Rota. A cover of a Kool and the Gang tune. And it kind of runs out of steam toward the end but, the US release doesn’t belabor that so, I can’t take anything off.
Yahn Leakier is a revelation and Matthew Ashman owes him his career.
Missed?:
Fuck yeah. I blame all my new wave friends for not forcing me to listen to this in 1981
