The 1986 Listening Post - The Nightingales - In the Good Old Country Way

The Nightingales - In the Good Old Country Way

#206/1351
May 1986
The Nightingales
In the Good Old Country Way
Genre: Punkternative
4.25 out of 5

Highlights:
Down in the Dumps
Leave It Out

This is…what the hell is this?
It touches on Psychobilly but it’s not psycho enough. But it’s not straight up Roots Rock cuz they are obviously affected by latter day punk aesthetics. They are their own thing.
In 86 no one is really making this kind of music anymore. If they are, they are tingeing it with too much aggression or trying really hard to be commercial. This is what I had always hoped The Clash would end up doing. They didn’t. And the fact that The Nightingales are a footnote suggest they were right not to.
But, boy, are songs like “Coincidence” unlike anything I have heard or expected to hear.
