Of course we all know Chumbawumba. They had that big, feel good hit, right?
I’ve always heard that they were more of an artistic, anarcho-collective. But I never listened to them before and, especially not after, that single.
I wish I had.
When my band, Yeast Infection, performed our one show, we smashed a copy of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” 45 on stage in some sort of protest.
On that first track they pull no punches, name check a bunch of artists and take them to crass task for commercialism and hypocrisy…but all to the musical bed of a calliope.
This is how you punk in the 80s. It’s insidious. It’s angry, yes, but, like it’s folk protest cousin of 20 years before, it’s accessibly listenable. In this case, it’s rhythmically dance.
