Jonesing for REM? Miss the paisley sound of, say, Long Ryders?
Here’s a band that shot for that style and didn’t have the tracks to make it work. I was really looking forward to this cuz it was produced by Peter Buck and you know this was right at the time that REM was flexing their muscles. Stipe had already been tapped for Golden Palominos and would appear on Stay Awake, the Hal Willner Disney record.
Buck moves the knobs correctly but he doesn’t have a helluva lot to work with.
When it works, it’s sweet. For the most part it meanders.
