The 1981 Listening Post - The Fools - Heavy Mental

 The Fools - Heavy Mental

#524

1981 Housekeeping

The Fools

Heavy Mental

Genre: Beantown Heroes

4 out of 5

Highlights:

Around the Block

Lost Number

Alibi

Requisite 80s Cover: Roy Orbison’s “Running Scared” which sounds like they are trying to sound as much like Roy as possible and that has me reaching for the original. Michael Girard has that quaver. But I prefer Roy’s.

How did this band not score a couple hits? They are obviously very accomplished guys who write a tight chorus and know their way around a studio.

The waning days of Power Pop are presenting us with perfectly acceptable albums in the genre but, really, it’s kind of done.

I dig the retro Eddie Cochran style number “Lost Number” quite a lot. It’s zany. I like zany.

This album feels like it should have been a hit and would have been if 1981 was 1979. Alter the instrumentation on “Coming Home with Me” and you’ve got a pretty good Hooters song.
