The 1981 Listening Post - Fair Warning - Fair Warning

Fair Warning - Fair Warning

#645

1981 Housekeeping

Fair Warning

Fair Warning

Genre: Power Pop

1.5 out of 5

Lowlights:

“South of the Border” is one of the worst things I’ve ever heard. Doubly so because it calls to mind “Jesus is My Friend” by Sonseed and I don’t need that in my life.

This bus a terrible record

But.

GUYS!

This is why we do this.

No, this isn’t some revelatory brilliance. It’s highly mediocre Power Pop with multi-layered harmonies that is aimed right at the Tiger Beat crowd.

So…why are you so excited, Allen?

In reading up about this band I learned that the whole record was written by famed industry lawyer and Donnie Iris songwriter, Mark Avsec! And that opening track…does it sound familiar?

It should.

Instead of promoting Fair Warning, the label thought it would have a better shot with one Jon Bongiovi.

It didn’t help that Van Halen had a record with the same name.

And both of those are better than the melodic rock offerings here. You’d do better with Donnie or Toto or any other rock bands of this ilk.

But, still.

What a footnote to the note that is Mark Avsec’s career.
