Nick Lowe
Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit
4 out of 5
Highlights:
Half a Boy and Half a Man
God’s Gift to Women
Not since Labour of Lust have I enjoyed a set of Lowe tunes as much as this. There’s a line from this reinvigoration of Nick as a roots rocker to the great contemporary Robbie Fulks. The music overcomes the production which has too much of that 80s echo and would be better served if it was recorded 5 years earlier, but that’s nitpicking. The main complaints would be that the better songs are the originals but there’s a handful of songs written by others and those aren’t as good and also for some reason every song seems to go on about a minute longer than it should (Looking at you “Gee and the Rick”) and When it crackles, like on “Breakaway” or the classic Lowe throw back “God’s Gift to Women”, it’s electric. There’s even room for an instrumental (“Awesome”) which is not something I expect from Nick.
