The 1984 Listening Post - Cristina - Sleep it Off

Cristina - Sleep it Off

#147

Cristina
Sleep it Off
4 out of 5

Highlights:
Don’t Mutilate My Mink
Ticket to the Tropics
What’s a Girl to Do

I only listened to the LP songs which I had to reorganize from this bloated CD release.

You know how all those late 70s/early 80s new wave bands like Missing Persons and Altered Images moved into accessibility and lost all of their daring and charm? Cristina found it.
Don Was produces this and adds menace and fear to the opener, “Don’t Mutilate My Mink”, which sounds like Sex Pistols as interpreted by Lady Gaga
Working with Doug (The Knack) Fieger she manages to find the edge of dance rock (“Ticket to the Tropics”) that would’ve been great in any girl rock catalog but is much more exciting with the synth edge she puts on it. To say that each song surprises with its incongruous edgy music meets deadpan delivery would be an understatement. Her version of Brecht/Weill’s “Ballad of Immoral Earnings” predates the Lost in the Stars LP but should’ve been included in that set.
