When the News is On

Hi roots rock. From the opening chords I am immediately reminded of Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper. Had I heard the Del Fuegos first perhaps that would be reversed but Mojo was funnier and The LA Weekly got me passes to see & review him and I’ve never heard of the Del Fuegos. You know who is on this and produced it??? Mitchell Froom. From would have a fruitful experience producing Elvis Costello’s Mighty Like a Rose among many others BUT what I knew him from was his excellent soundtrack to the X-Rated sci-fi flick, Cafe Flesh. A soundtrack I used to have, but lost and can not find anywhere.
And you know who this is???? Dan Zanes!! The kids song writer. Which is why so much of this is so good.
Man, the pedigree on this record is spectacular. it’s just the wrong time, guys. Lean into the Romantics and away from the country and this is a bigger hit. Instead it suffers from 80s production and the fact that The Byrds are a relic and their sound was updated by REM who’s devotion wasn’t so ardent.
