Just how fucking gifted is Nile Rodgers?
Bowie ruined his relationship with Tony Visconti to have Nile produce this album cuz he wanted “hits”. Those “hits” are monsters.
“China Girl” could’ve been perfectly in place with Scary Monsters’ set but Nike turns it into an AOR/MOR but if ear candy. Not even a shitty video could stop this freight train. Same for the title track which might’ve languished as a deep cut on any previous Bowie record but here it’s a centerpiece classic. And I prefer the album 7+ minute version. It's basically Funkytown. And it's great
Some tracks (I’m looking at you, “Without You” are pedestrian and annoying in their 80s-ness but you could just flip the lp at that point.
While I prefer the original single version of “Cat People” reworking it into an album cut here freshens it up…it’sthe song I always wished my band had covered.
