The culmination of the band’s aesthetic, musicianship & egos. In retrospect it is perfect that they ended on this statement. Sting’s worst, most self indulgent excesses would take him into MOR land, Copeland would write the Rumble Fish soundtrack which is really all I ever need to hear from him again and be happy…and the other guy…the John Deacon of the band…Andy Summers…yeah, he was kind of just lucky to be there, anyway.
With the chaotic horns and pounding mid-eastern and eastern rhythms, this is an album so OF the 80s it’s remarkable. At times it’s classic pop, at others it’s some strange John Lennon/David Bowie art rock amalgam.
I’ve never loved The Police. They are a classic case of “I liked their earlier stuff” for me. But this album has so much going for it I see past much of the self-importance.
