The Stranglers

The Gospel According to the Meninblack

Genre: Post-Rock

1.75 out of 5

Ah, the familiar strains of demented calliope…what was going on in the early 80s that so many musicians vaulted back to the 1800s to play in that steampunk idiom? Did they all watch The Elephant Man and buy John Barry’s exquisite soundtrack and decided that the world needed a LOT more of it?

That’s how this Stranglers record opens. And from there it follows the story of alien invasions and governmental cover ups. I really do wish The Stranglers were up to the task instead of just coming across as a bar basement cover band of M’s “Pop Muzik” (“Just Like Nothing on Earth”).

I’m no Stranglers fan (Aural Sculptures excluded) but this is bad by even their standards.
