 J.J. Cale - Shades

J.J. Cale

Shades

Genre: Rock

Highlights:

Carry On

“Though he avoided the limelight, his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock”.”

As I am a fan of none of those musicians I approached this record with great trepidation. As often is the case, the influencER is more interesting than those he influenced. That’s not the case I found with this Cale record. There is nothing here that illicit any spark. It’s perfectly fine white boy blues rock but the songs are dull, the playing is fine but paint-by-numbers. He comes to life on “Mama Don’t”  and “What Do You Expect?” but it’s an exercise in futility since you know he can do this in his sleep.
