Highlights:

Monica

I feel like there’s a pretty good rock band underneath the skittish drums and frenetic bass lines here. The band starts this off with minimal lyrics that are really just hung on repeated aforementioned rhythms and, in the end, what we are left with is a party band with no party to go play for.

Eventually we get songs that should have been singles like “Monica” and “Give Me All Your Love” but, ultimately, these guys are slaves to the pocket.

It’s the Jack Winter and Tod Palidori show and everyone else is just along for it.

They do sing a lot of boring songs about specific girls.  And an obsession with 60s flicks, since they cover the theme to “In Like Flynt” and have a song called “Suzie Wong”, which is not included on the original vinyl but is the catchiest, least bass-dependent tune on the record.

The thing about this record that had my attention the most was waiting for the final track, “Blood and Sand”.

Blood and Sand is a cocktail and it’s one of my favorites. Equal parts Scotch, Cherry Liqeur, Orange Juice & Sweet Vermouth. I drop a bright red cherry in it as well. It’s delicious. It’s named after a Rudolph Valentino movie and I first had it at a terrific bar in Canada, but I can’t recall which province.

Anyway, it’s a long, moody piece about war. It might have been a nice Alarm track at some point but these guys are no Alarm.
