Ok. This is one of those days that I love this project. (Truth be told, 1981 has really made me want to quit many many times).
Those of you who have been around know that I have a sweet spot for big 80s hair metal. So much so that when I guested on the estimable podcast, “The Spoon”, I once made them close out the show with a song by Station, a Brooklyn band obsessed with that echoing drum, power ballading stadium rock sound. Can’t help it. Love that sound. I can’t wait to have backyard salons so we can all jam to an acoustic version of “Juke Box Hero”. I wanna play some Journey back there. Sue me.
Ok, but why bring all that up?
Wrabit IS that kind of band. And this album should have been replete with hits.
The sound is cavernous, the vocals are Night Rangerriffic. The soaring solos are…Mwah! Those multi-layered backing harmonies are right at the top of my music food pyramid. And Lou Nadeau has the pipes for this sound, a sound which will consume the airwaves shortly. I’m sure they got airplay in their homeland of Canada. I’m sure that Canadians would read this review and be, like, “Allen…are you okay? Did you fall down?”
Like I said…Sue Me. I dig this stuff.
But, Allen, is there a power ballad at the end of Side One? Why, yes, Kevin. There most certainly is.
Does Side Two open with a crunchy rock attack? How’d ya guess, Diane?
Like Styx? You’re gonna like Wrabit.
At least I think so. Shitty name and all.
