When I thought to myself, “Self, this sounds like David Bowie fronting a pub rock band that is covering unreleased Bruce Springsteen jams from the late 70s, I was not surprised at all to re-discover that Clarence Clemons covered the song on a record a couple years later.

Like Grushecky, this is a band that stands in the shadow of Bruce, never getting close to being Jukes-worthy and, ultimately forgotten.

Too bad. The songs aren’t half bad.

Aside from the title track none of the songs were hits but I submit that the semi-jingoist “Heart of America” and “How Do You Live” should have been singles. The latter would have fit a Bonnie Tyler nicely.

The thing about this record is, like others of it’s ilk, it grows on you and gets better. A lot of it (like “Little Mistakes”) could have fallen off a Boomtown Rats record or even Meat Loaf. That’s a good thing, btw.

This album is a hoot.
