The 1981 Listening Post - Ian Dury - Lord Upminster

 Ian Dury - Lord Upminster

#419

September 1981

Ian Dury

Lord Upminster

Genre: Trash Neu-Waveggae.

0.75 out of 5

Lowlights:

Girls (Watching)

Trust (is a Must)

Spasticus (Autisticus)

Is Ian Dury considered a comic genius by anyone out there? I never got any of the jokes but I’m just a kid from New Jersey.

The opening disco track suffers from torpor and the follow up track, “Red (Letter)” is lethargic pseudo reggae. What’s the deal with this guy?

What is it I am missing?

Do you have to be an Anglophile to get it?  I kind of enjoy that each song has a parenthetical but I believe that Ian thinks that’s high comedy and…it’s really not.

“Girls (Watching)” is the sound of a songwriter who has given up, travelled to the islands, imbibed a lot of rum, smoked some kush and strung some words together and convinced a handful of people to buy it.

omg….the turgidness of this thing….

Reading up on why and how he wrote “Spasticus Autisticus” the only conclusion I can come to is that Ian Dury is not a blockhead. He’s an asshole.
