The 1981 Listening Post - The Act - Too Late at 20

The Act - Too Late at 20

#420

March 10 1981

The Act

Too Late at 20

Genre: Power Pop

3 out of 5

Highlights:

The Long Island Sound

Skip the Beat

Take the guy who would go on to front The Dream Academy and David Gilmour’s brother and put them together but make them write power pop ditties and that’s this band.

You can hear the Dream starting but what happened to Mark Gilmour? The songs are perfectly fine pieces of PP constructed goodness.

This reminds me a bit of The Producers inasmuch as it’s quality stuff that realizes the writing in on the wall for it and that, for the future well being of one’s coffers, it’s best to head in a different direction.

Weird that I heard this just after that Nerves record and both have a track called “Touch and Go”. Add the Cars and you could make a nifty little playlist.

This is the better of the two I heard today.

As I listen to “Skip the Beat”, with it’s Reggae opening and stiffly ska beat I have to wonder: Have we ever determined just why it was that ALL New Wave bands from this era included at least one Reggae/Ska tune on their album? Like it was a law or something. Did they have to include one? Was there that much of a clamor for this sound in 1981??

Ah well. It’s one of the better tracks.

Point off for not having the entire thing.
