Running Out of Time

Genre: Pedestrisynth

3.25 out of 5

Requisite 80s covers:

“Heartbreak Hotel” & “Johnny B Goode” Both of which are fine synth-y updates but I’d really prefer the former if Rexy wasn’t “singing” on it. On the other hand, I really like what she does on the latter, which is to say that she sounds like just about every English girl pop singer of the era, only she seems to be having a great time. The song sounds like what Aliens would come up with if they listened to rock music.

So, Eurythmics member Vic Martin is looking for a project to occupy his time and he sees this goth girl hanging out at a club and…well…Vice wrote: “ he liked the way Rex looked, with her unimpressed expression and over-the-top, new romantic outfits. “Do you want to make a record?” he asked her straight away, unsure if she’d ever sang, or would even want to start. She hadn’t and didn’t, but agreed to it anyway for something to do over the summer. They called themselves Rexy.”

And it sounds like that. Rexy comes across like a kind of bored Annabella Lwin. Without the sex appeal, of course. And Vix is no Malcolm.

To these ears, the most exciting piece is the instrumental, “Nervoso” and that says a lot.

Look, Rexy isn’t a singer. She went into fashion, apparently and, to some, this album is as Xex’s is to me. I’m struck by this part of the article though, “Rex says, “Hang on! I’ve got something for you!” and rifles through her bag, pulling out a small, crumpled white package with the words ‘Rexy II’ across. Inside is a CD. “We’ve been working on new music together, this is the first version of it,” she tells me. “You won’t like it! No one does! But we don’t care—have a listen anyway.””

Yep. There it is on Apple Music. It was released in 2020. I won’t listen to it. Mainly cuz my computer wants to autocorrect “Rexy” to “Roxy” every time and I’m quite frankly done with it.

As far as the Alien aspect: This is what the other worldly beings would have come up with in the book “Year Zero”, which is about how the rest of the universe can’t make music and has been listening to signals from Earth and, being beings of high integrity, realize they own Earth royalties in the amount that would bankrupt the galaxy. I like that book. Its a good companion to this album.
