How did Johnny and the G-Rays not make it? Were they just too soon? Remember when Simple Minds changed direction and had a hit that basically ruined them forever since all the little kids wanted them to keep being The Psychedelic Furs and that wasn’t their thing?

This is that thing. If you wanted a band that sounded like the “Don’t You Forget About Me” Simple Minds but weren’t cloying and added more New 80s rock to the mix, that’s Johnny and the G-Rays.

AHHHHHH!!! They are Canadian!!! From Toronto. Now, it all makes sense

There’s a bit of The Waterboys in here. And maybe a touch of The Alarm. At least in the first three tracks.

The second side is a bit more eased back but, from what I’ve read, there was a lot of tension making this record and only the two lead members of the band liked it.

Johnny and the G-Rays were a one and done but, damn, this one sounds more like the coming 80s than just about anything we’ve heard this year.

I liked it.
