It Ain't Cool To Be Cruel

You name your band Arrogance, you know that you are setting up your audience for some rage, right?

But…this…isn’t rage filled. It’s Americana.

And of course it is. This is Don Dixon’s band. He of the Jangle Pop. The guy who gave us Dumptruck, Guadalcanal Diary and, of course, R.E.M.

Mitch Easter gets the credit but I think Don Dixon is the real architect of that 80s sound.

Allmusic says this record sounds like The Romantics with brains as opposed to their previous outings from the 70s which they said was like Buffalo Springfield with humor. I can’t speak to that, it’s before my musical awakening but it sounds right.

Actually, both sort of sound correct with this album.

This is Americana that is out of step with the times but we all know it’s this very band that will usher in a “new” sound of Americana that will take over the college stations and get called “Alternative”, even though it’s really just Bad Company and The Byrds with Jangle.
