Modern Man

Waiting for a Change

Opus 10

Mushroom Boy

Can’t really describe why but this album sounds more like mid-80s top 40 rock than the year it came out. Maybe it’s the keys. I don’t know. I feel like “Modern Man” could be the backing music to Pringles commercials from 1986.

This is a very varied collection of tunes that have little in common with each other and also no personality of their own and yet, they aren’t bad. “Jeff, Jeff” is wacky enough to be a late 70s Tubes song but, without a Fee Waybill to send it over the top it’s just a curio.

“Waiting for a Change” is a Joe Jackson tune and I think it could have been a hit a year before because it doesn’t sound just like him but it’s PP enough to have made some headway in the year of Power Pop.

Going through the side, “Elizabeth” bites so hard on Elvis that it’s hard not to think they don’t have ideas of their own.

But then the Joe Jackson is back on “Opus 10” which is like the “Friday” of this side. But it’s excellent.

This is The Rubinoos without the extreme goofiness.
