The 1985 Listening Post - Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy

Ratt - Invasion of Your Privacy

#208
June 13 1985
Ratt
Invasion of Your Privacy
Genre: Glam Metal
3.75 out of 5

Highlights:
You’re In Love
Lay it Down

I’ve always liked Stephen Pearcy’s vocal approach. He’s genre appropriate growly but he’s also somewhat laid back and laconic. Tres California.
The sound isn’t much different than Out of the Cellar. The echoed vocals are still somewhat buried in the mix, and so are the licks. It feels like rhythm is the most important thing to Ratt, in an AC DC sort of way. Except when it’s time for Angus or Brian to shine, they do and Ratt seems compelled to flatten everything out.
And there are times when they sound like what they really want to be: Kiss clones. “Give it All” is such a carbon copy of “Lick it Up” that Gene and Paul should get a writing credit. Other times they get the genre so correct it’s damned formulaic (“You Should Know By Now”)
This sound is dying but Ratt hasn’t given up the ship yet.
