Here’s the secret that no one seems to talk about: From the punk movement of the 70s/80s, John Doe was the best vocalist and maybe the best songwriter.
Listen to his version of merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings” and tell me that Jello, Ving, Rollins, any of them had near the talent.
Then listen to “Someone Like You” and tell me that any of them were as good a writer.
This might be as close to country as we get and the reason we are covering it is because, well, it’s basically X. Their ears were to the (under now over) ground, knowing what was coming out of the CowPunk movement and they rode with it.
Exene’s never sounded as good before or since.
With this album, X, poet laureates of the Los Angeles Punk Set, said, “it’s over. Move on.”
And we all kind of did. For a while.
