Highlights:
We Close Our Eyes
Don’t Look Down
I almost forgot the 80s signature sound. But, right from jump it’s there in spades. But there’s more to Go West than pop synth. I was actually surprised. “Don’t Look Down” could have been written for Rick Springfield. In fact, I can hear him singing it in my head, it’s a neat little power pop offering. It’s just that it relies on keyboards in counterpoint to Alan Murphy’s excellent solo. (He soars on “Haunted” as well and is really the best and most consistently interesting thing on this record) After that it really settles in for some Blue Eyed soul. The kind of songs that, in 15 years are going to be bread and butter for O Town and Boyz2Men and will cease to be included in this overview. Damn, I forgot “S.O.S.”. it’s fine. It’s more like the marriage of BES and John Parr. It belongs on a soundtrack and could be covered by a Parr like singer and be a hit for them.
And, oh yeah, Pino Palladino and his Fretless Bass is on this thing, too and, honestly, I don’t care. Yeah, yeah, you’re great, Pino. But you overshadow every crap song you are forced to play on.
