Opening with a cover. Of “Instant Karma”. And applying their own twisted perspective to it, I am weirdly drawn in. Like it’s a statement. Instant Karma is, indeed, going to get you. You bought this record. You decided to listen to it. THAT, my friend was your choice and this album’s contents are your Karma.
There’s a bunch of covers here, “Red Headed Stranger” (also wholly demented) and T. Rex’s “Life’s a Gas”, (Also twistedly bizarre) and they get their due.
Truth is, this whole record sounds like an audition for a slot on the Dr. Demento Show. It’s kind of perfect and also challenging to listen to this and Deep Freeze Mice back to back.
I would love to highlights stuff like “When You Dream About Bleeding” but I also don’t want to ruin your day.
In the end, it’s not very rewarding, cohesive or, really, all that interesting.
You don’t need this in your life. And, truth be told, this has soured me, retroactively, on every Allmusic review Chadbourne has ever written.
