The 1985 Listening Post - The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys - The Beach Boys

#203
June 10 1985
The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys
Genre: Pop Rock
2.25 out of 5

Highlights:
Getcha Back
Where I Belong

Well, the harmonies are all there on the first track, “Getcha Back”. And it’s laconic in the way that I have come to expect from latter day sun drenched California rock.
But, after that, it’s a cornucopia of shitty MOR contributions from each member. They each have one or two tracks to toss in here, save Mike who only has credit on that first track, which is the only thing worth hearing. The egregious trespassing on old Beach Boys sound, “California’s Calling”, is enough to make one hit the Next button, reflexively.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that “Passing Friend” was written by Boy George and Roy Hay of Culture Club. It sounds like Culture Club. It should be a Culture Club song. It doesn’t belong in the hands of anyone involved with The Beach Boys or in the Mouth of Carl.
He makes up for it with the lovely “Where I Belong”, though, a high point amidst a turgid sea of unmemorable pop.
